Hydroelectric Energy

Hydroelectric power is considered one of the first renewable and green energy sources because it does not require burning any fuel. Instead, it uses the natural flow of water to get its energy. It works by:

  1. Feeding water through a shaft in a dam known as a penstock.

  2. The water pushes a turnbine as it goes through the shaft.

  3. The water is released back into the river.

This process is shown in the diagram below. Just like traditional power, it requires turning a turbine. However, it requires no fuel and it requires not burning, making it a much cleaner power source.

This source of energy is very popular, and many of the world's greatest engineering feats are hydroelectric dams. These great structures have provided energy for over a hundred years.
